Supporting A Partner with Depression

Writer's picture: Rachel JonesRachel Jones

Being in a relationship or dating someone with depression can be challenging. Challenging does not mean impossible though.

To support your partner with depression, start by learning about depression. Read some books, listen to podcasts, or speak with someone who has dealt with depression in their life.

Be present with your partner. Be curious about what your partner is experiencing and going through. Focus on trying to understand them over trying to fix them.

If your partner is open to suggestions on how to work on their depression, encourage them to meet with a therapist, to move their body daily, and to try one thing each day that brings them joy (or used to bring them joy).
